> What AI agents for business finance can do today: bookkeeping, cash flow forecasts, invoicing, collections, financing applications and offer comparison, plus the risks.

An AI agent for business finance can do real work today: categorize transactions, draft a cash flow forecast from your bank feed, prepare invoices, send collection reminders, apply for financing through an MCP server and compare the offers that come back. What it cannot do is be trusted with a number it has not shown you, or with a permission you have not scoped. This guide separates what is ready now from what needs supervision and what is not ready, and shows how to start with one task.

## Key facts
- **Ready now:** Transaction categorization, document extraction, invoice drafting, reminders, loan application prep
- **With supervision:** Cash flow forecasts, bill payment runs, offer comparison, tax estimates
- **Not yet:** Unattended money movement, signing, final tax filings, credit decisions
- **The safety model:** Scoped permissions, approval before each action, revoke from either side

## What is an AI agent for a small business, in plain terms?

An assistant that can take actions in your tools, not just answer questions. A chat model writes you a cash flow template; an agent connects to your bank feed, reads the transactions, builds the forecast and asks whether to save it. The connection is usually an MCP server, a short fixed list of things the agent can do inside one product, and it can only do what is on that list.

For a business owner the difference shows up as time. The agent reads the statements, drafts the invoice or fills the form, and you review. It does not replace your bookkeeper or your judgment; it replaces the hour of exporting, copying and retyping. The [agents hub](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/) shows how this works for financing, and [using AI to get a business loan](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/using-ai-to-get-a-business-loan/) walks through one job end to end.

## What can an AI agent do for your finances today?

Six jobs are working now. Bookkeeping categorization: the agent reads bank and card transactions and proposes categories, and you approve the unusual ones. Document extraction: it pulls revenue, balances, debt payments and profit from statements and tax returns. Invoicing: it drafts invoices from a job or a timesheet. Collections: it finds overdue invoices and drafts or sends reminders on a schedule you set. Financing: connected to a lending MCP server, it fills a loan application from your documents, matches lenders and submits with your approval. Offer comparison: it turns term sheets into one table of amount, cost, payment, term and guarantee.

Cash flow forecasting is close behind. An agent can build a 13 week forecast from your bank feed and receivables, but the assumptions need your eyes every week; [financial projections for a business loan](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/financial-projections-for-a-business-loan/) shows what to check.

## What can it not do yet?

Move money without a human, sign anything, file a tax return, or make a credit decision. Agents can prepare a bill payment run, but the approval should stay with you, because a wrong vendor or a duplicate invoice is money gone. They can draft a tax estimate, but a filing needs a preparer who is accountable for it. They can compare loan offers, but they cannot accept one, and no agent can make a lender approve a file whose cash flow does not cover the payment.

They also cannot be trusted with numbers you have not seen. An agent that reads a statement will usually extract it correctly; an agent asked to fill a gap will produce something plausible. The rule: what it reads from a document, verify by sampling; what it generates without a source, verify in full.

## What is the consent model that makes agentic finance safe?

Scoped access, approval before action, and revocation from either side. Scoped access means the agent connects through OAuth to a specific product with a specific list of permissions, and you see the list before you agree; it never gets your password. Approval before action means the agent asks before it runs a tool that changes, sends or spends something, and you allow once, allow always for a tool you trust, or decline. Revocation means you can cut the agent off in your assistant's settings or the product's security page, at once.

Our MCP server works this way. The agent can read the documents you share, fill and check the application, match lenders and submit, and nothing goes to a lender until you confirm the lenders and the documents by name. It cannot accept offers or sign. The [security page](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/security/) lists every permission.

## Which finance tasks are ready, and which need supervision?

The table below sorts the common tasks into ready now, works with supervision, and not yet. The sort is by what goes wrong when the agent is wrong, not by how clever the agent is. Categorizing a transaction wrongly costs a correction at month end; paying the wrong vendor costs the money. Tasks where the agent reads and drafts are ready. Tasks where it predicts need supervision. Tasks where it moves money or signs are not yet.

Pick a first task from the table, and move a task up a level only after the agent has done it correctly, with you watching, for a month. The same logic applies to the AI agents for business that vendors now bundle into accounting and banking software: the label does not matter, the permission does.

## How do you start with one task?

Pick the chore you do weekly that is all reading and typing, connect one tool, and run the agent with approval on every action for a month. For most owners that is one of three: categorizing the month's transactions, chasing overdue invoices, or preparing a financing application. Each has a clear input, a clear output and a human check at the end.

Give the agent read access where that is an option, keep a log of what it did, and review it weekly for the first month. Then decide, task by task, which actions can move to allow always. If the first task is financing, the [document checklist](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/document-checklist/) tells you what to gather, and the [Claude](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/claude/) and [ChatGPT](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/chatgpt/) pages show the setup.

## What are the honest risks?

Three, and all three are manageable if you know them. Hallucinated numbers: a model asked for a figure it does not have will produce one, and a wrong number in a loan application is worse than a blank. Give the agent the documents, tell it to mark gaps as placeholders, and verify anything it did not read from a source. Over permissioned tools: an agent with write access to your bank, your books and your email can do real damage in one bad prompt, including a prompt hidden inside a document it reads. Grant the least access that does the task, and keep money and signing on ask every time.

Vendor lock in: if your workflow lives inside one assistant's memory and one vendor's connector, switching is painful. Prefer open standards such as MCP and keep your documents in your own folder. Our connector works the same in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok, and your application and offers live in your account on this site.

|---|---|---|---|
| Categorize bank transactions | Ready now | Proposes categories from history and rules | Approve the unusual ones |
| Extract numbers from statements and returns | Ready now | Reads revenue, balances, debt, profit | Spot check against the source |
| Draft invoices | Ready now | Builds the invoice from a job or timesheet | Review and send |
| Collections reminders | Ready now | Finds overdue invoices, drafts and sends reminders | Tone, schedule, exceptions |
| Prepare a financing application | Ready now | Fills the form from documents, flags gaps, matches lenders | Approve lenders and documents |
| Compare loan offers | Works with supervision | Turns term sheets into one table and explains clauses | Decide; read the clauses yourself |
| 13 week cash flow forecast | Works with supervision | Builds it from the bank feed and receivables | Review assumptions weekly |
| Bill payment run | Works with supervision | Prepares the run from approved bills | Approve every payment |
| Tax estimates | Works with supervision | Drafts the estimate from the books | Preparer reviews; you file |
| Move money or sign | Not yet | Nothing unattended | Everything |
| Credit decisions | Not yet | Explains what lenders will look at | The lender decides |

## Questions and answers
**What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot for finance?**

A chatbot answers; an agent acts. An agent connects to your tools through a fixed list of permissions, reads your data, drafts or fills the work, and asks before it changes anything. The useful part is the reading and drafting; the risky part is the acting.

**Can an AI agent get my business a loan?**

It can prepare and file the application, match lenders whose criteria you meet, submit with your approval and summarize the offers. It cannot change your cash flow, credit or time in business, and no agent, broker or lender can guarantee approval.

**Which tools do I connect first?**

The one that holds the job you picked. For categorization and invoicing, your accounting software. For collections, accounting plus email. For financing, a folder with your statements and tax returns plus our MCP server. Add a second tool after the first task runs correctly for a month.

**Will an agent replace my bookkeeper?**

Not yet, and probably not the judgment part. Agents are good at volume: categorizing, extracting, drafting, chasing. A bookkeeper or accountant still closes the books, catches what the agent misclassified, and signs off on what goes to a lender or the tax authority.
