> A first time borrower's guide to business loans: what lenders ask, which products are friendliest, how much to ask for, and the mistakes that cost money.

If you have never borrowed for your business, expect lenders to ask for bank statements and tax returns, to check your personal credit, and to require a personal guarantee. The friendliest first products are a business credit card, a line of credit, equipment financing and, if you can wait, an SBA loan. This guide covers what to expect, how much to ask for, the mistakes that cost new borrowers money, and the questions to ask before you sign.

## Key facts
- **What every lender will ask for:** Bank statements, tax returns, your personal credit and a personal guarantee
- **Friendliest first products:** Business credit cards, lines of credit, equipment financing, SBA loans
- **Most common first mistake:** Applying to many lenders separately and collecting hard credit inquiries
- **Cost to apply here:** Free; lenders pay us when a loan funds

## What will lenders ask you for?

Every lender asks four things: how long you have been in business, how much revenue you make, what your personal credit looks like, and what the money is for. They verify the first two from bank statements and tax returns, not from your answers. They check the third with a credit pull. The fourth decides which product fits.

You will also sign a personal guarantee on almost any loan under $1 million, which is normal. [Business loan requirements](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/business-loan-requirements/) gives the typical bars by lender type, and the [document checklist](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/document-checklist/) lists what to gather before you start.

## Which products are easiest for a first time borrower?

A [business credit card](https://businessloanbroker.ai/business-loans/business-credit-cards/) is the easiest first credit: approval is based on your personal credit and it starts a business credit file. A [line of credit](https://businessloanbroker.ai/business-loans/line-of-credit/) is the most useful first loan for most businesses because you only pay for what you draw. [Equipment financing](https://businessloanbroker.ai/business-loans/equipment-financing/) is easy to get because the equipment is the collateral.

An [SBA loan](https://businessloanbroker.ai/business-loans/sba-loans/) is the cheapest option if you have two years of history and can wait one to three months; SBA microloans go to younger businesses in smaller amounts. Cash advances are the easiest of all to get, which is exactly why first time borrowers should be careful with them: expensive to carry and hard to leave.

## How much should you ask for?

Ask for the amount the purpose needs plus a modest cushion, and no more than your cash flow can repay comfortably. Lenders size loans on your numbers anyway: online lenders typically cap at 10% to 20% of annual revenue, and banks size on cash flow using a [DSCR](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/dscr-explained/) of 1.25. Asking for far more than your file supports gets you declined.

Work out the payment before you apply. A $100,000 loan at 12% over three years costs about $3,320 a month; make sure that fits under your average monthly profit with room for a slow month. The [business loan calculator](https://businessloanbroker.ai/tools/business-loan-calculator/) shows the payment for any amount, rate and term.

## What mistakes cost first time borrowers the most?

Applying everywhere at once: each separate application can mean a hard credit pull and a new set of document requests, and lenders see the inquiries. Taking the first offer, which is usually the fastest and most expensive one. Not converting a factor rate to an APR before comparing. Borrowing the maximum offered rather than what the purpose needs. Missing the prepayment clause.

Two more: taking a second cash advance to cover the first, which most lenders treat as a reason to decline you, and letting bank statements show overdrafts in the months before applying. Every one of these is avoidable with a week of preparation. [Why loans get denied](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/why-loans-get-denied/) covers what lenders actually see.

## What should you ask a lender before you sign?

Ask for the APR and the total payback, in writing. Ask what the payment is and how often it is taken: monthly, weekly or daily. Ask what happens if you pay early. Ask what collateral the lender takes and whether the lien is blanket or specific. Ask whether the guarantee is unlimited. Ask what fees are deducted from the proceeds.

If any answer is vague or the lender will not put it in writing, that is your answer. [How to read a term sheet](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/how-to-read-a-term-sheet/) walks through each line of the offer, and [business loan scams](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/business-loan-scams/) covers the offers to walk away from.

## How does the process work from start to finish?

You apply, the lender reviews your documents and credit, it may ask for more items (stipulations), it issues an offer or term sheet, you accept, you sign closing documents, and funds arrive. Fast products do all of that in days; banks and SBA lenders take weeks to months. [What happens after you submit](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/what-happens-after-you-submit/) explains each step.

The simplest way to start is one application that reaches lenders in every category, so you compare real offers instead of guessing which lender to try. You can do that here, free, or ask your AI assistant to prepare and submit the application for you through our MCP server; see the [agents hub](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/).

| Product | How easy to get | Typical cost | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business credit card | Easy with 650 or higher personal credit | 15% to 30% APR | Carrying a balance past an intro period |
| Line of credit | Moderate; 6 to 12 months in business online | 8% to 60% APR | Draw fees, variable rates |
| Equipment financing | Easy; the equipment is the collateral | 6% to 25% APR | Equipment that will not last the term |
| SBA 7(a) or microloan | Harder; 2 years typical | Prime plus a capped spread | 30 to 90 days to fund |
| Online term loan | Moderate; 1 year and 600 credit | 10% to 50% APR | Prepayment terms, origination fees |
| Merchant cash advance | Very easy | Often 40% to 150% APR or more | Daily payments, renewals, stacking |

## Questions and answers
**Can I get a business loan with no credit history?**

Business credit history, yes; most online lenders and equipment lenders do not require any. Personal credit history is harder to skip, because almost every lender pulls it. If your personal file is thin, a secured business credit card is the usual first step.

**Should I use a personal loan for my business instead?**

Usually not. Personal loans are smaller, do not build business credit, and mix your finances in a way that complicates taxes and any future business loan. They can make sense for very new businesses with no revenue. This site handles business financing only.

**How do I know if an offer is fair?**

Compare it with the typical ranges in business loan rates explained, convert any factor rate to an APR, and get at least one other offer. An offer within the typical range from a lender who names its fees and puts everything in writing is fair. One well above the range with pressure to sign today is not.

**Do I need a business plan to get a loan?**

For most online loans, lines and equipment financing, no; lenders decide on bank statements and credit. Banks and SBA lenders usually want one for startups, acquisitions and businesses under two years old. For an established business, a one page summary of the purpose and repayment plan is usually enough.
