> The SBA loan process runs from prequalification to funding in 30 to 90 days for a 7(a) loan. The steps, maximums by program, and what slows a file.

The SBA loan process runs from prequalification to funding in typically 30 to 90 days for a 7(a) loan, 45 to 120 for a 504, and two to six weeks for an Express loan or microloan. Limits by program: $5 million for 7(a) and most 504 projects, $500,000 for Express, $50,000 for microloans. Here are the steps and what slows a file.

## Key facts
- **7(a) maximum:** $5 million; 85% guaranteed up to $150,000, 75% above
- **504 maximum:** $5 million, or $5.5 million for small manufacturers and energy projects
- **Express and microloans:** $500,000 and $50,000
- **Typical time to fund:** 7(a) 30 to 90 days, 504 45 to 120, Express and microloans 2 to 6 weeks
- **Decides most files:** Complete documents, filed returns, DSCR of 1.25, 680 credit

## What are the steps in the SBA loan process?

Seven; the first three are yours.

- **Prequalify.** A lender or this site checks eligibility, credit, time in business and rough debt coverage. One to three days.
- **Gather documents.** Three years of returns, year to date financials, a debt schedule, a personal financial statement per 20% owner, and a use of funds; see [what you need to apply](https://businessloanbroker.ai/apply/what-you-need/).
- **Apply.** The lender's application plus the SBA forms, typically Form 1919 for the business and Form 413 for each owner.
- **Underwriting.** A credit memo, plus an appraisal on property or a valuation on a business purchase.
- **Approval.** Preferred lenders approve in house; others send the file to the SBA, which typically answers in 5 to 10 business days.
- **Closing.** Insurance, lien filings, entity documents, proof of your cash injection, signatures.
- **Funding.** The lender disburses, often directly to sellers and creditors.

## What are the SBA loan limits by program?

The well known maximums: $5 million for a 7(a) loan, $5 million for the SBA portion of a 504 or $5.5 million for small manufacturers and certain energy projects, $500,000 for SBA Express, and $50,000 for a microloan. A 504 project can be much larger than the limit, because the bank's first lien is not capped.

Two limits catch people. The SBA's total guaranteed exposure to one borrower and its affiliates across 7(a) loans is capped at $3.75 million. And there is no official minimum, but most 7(a) lenders will not write under $25,000 to $50,000; below that, microloans and [Express loans](https://businessloanbroker.ai/business-loans/sba-express-loans/) fill the gap. In Canada, the CSBFP lends up to $1.15 million per borrower.

## How long does it take to get an SBA loan?

Typically 30 to 90 days from a complete application to money for a 7(a), 45 to 120 for a 504, and two to six weeks for Express and microloans. By stage: prequalification one to three days, documents one to two weeks, underwriting two to four weeks, SBA approval up to two weeks for lenders without preferred status, closing two to four weeks. Property adds two to four weeks for the appraisal and environmental report; business purchases typically run 60 to 120 days.

The SBA's 36 hour response on Express loans is its answer to the lender, not your funding. The fastest files are the ones that arrive complete. [How long business loans take](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/how-long-it-takes/) covers every product.

## What slows an SBA file?

Missing pieces, in a predictable order:

- Tax returns not filed, or an unpaid federal tax balance not yet on a payment plan.
- Large deposits with no explanation, or a debt on your credit report but not on your debt schedule.
- Cash injection that cannot be traced to its source, or that was borrowed.
- Entity documents out of date or not matching the ownership on the forms.
- Seller financials that do not match the seller's tax returns.
- Insurance, flood determinations and life insurance ordered in the last week.
- Switching lenders midway, which restarts underwriting.
Each is fixable before you apply; [why loans get denied](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/why-loans-get-denied/) covers what happens when it is not.

## Which lenders make SBA loans, and does the choice matter?

Banks, credit unions, and nonbank lenders licensed by the SBA, and the choice matters. Lenders with preferred status approve in house, which removes the SBA review step and often saves two weeks. Each lender also has its own credit box: some specialize in business purchases, some in property, some in smaller loans scored largely on credit, and some will not touch startups or certain industries.

Our [lender directory](https://businessloanbroker.ai/lenders/) profiles SBA lenders such as [Live Oak Bank](https://businessloanbroker.ai/lenders/live-oak-bank/), Ready Capital and Newity, with what each one looks for. Matching the file to the right lender on day one is most of what a good broker does, and it is what this site's application is built to do.

## Questions and answers
**What is the minimum SBA loan amount?**

The SBA sets none, but most 7(a) lenders will not write a loan under $25,000 to $50,000. Microloans start as low as $500 through nonprofit intermediaries, and Express loans cover the range between. Under $50,000, a microloan or an Express line is usually the practical route.

**Can I have more than one SBA loan at the same time?**

Yes, as long as each loan is eligible on its own and the SBA's total guaranteed exposure to you and your affiliates stays within its cap, $3.75 million across 7(a) loans. Lenders also look at combined debt coverage, so a second loan has to fit alongside the first.

**How long does SBA approval take once the lender submits?**

Lenders with preferred status approve in house, often within days. Lenders without it send the file to the SBA, which typically answers in 5 to 10 business days. Express loans get a response within 36 hours. Approval is not funding: closing still takes two to four weeks.

**Can I apply directly to the SBA?**

Not for 7(a), 504, Express or microloans. The SBA guarantees loans made by banks, credit unions and licensed lenders, so you apply with a lender and the lender deals with the SBA. The exception is disaster loans, which the SBA makes directly after a declared disaster.
