> The real reasons business loans get denied: thin cash flow, time in business, credit, industry, documents, stacking and overdrafts, with the fix for each.

Business loans are denied for a short list of reasons: cash flow that does not cover the payment, too little time in business, credit problems, a restricted industry, missing documents, too much existing debt, overdrafts and negative days on bank statements, and tax liens or judgments. Lenders rarely explain which one applied to you. This guide does, and gives the fix for each.

## Key facts
- **Most common reason at banks:** Thin cash flow, or under two years in business
- **Most common reason online:** Overdrafts and negative days on bank statements
- **Most common reason for cash advances:** Existing advances, called stacking
- **Fixable within 90 days:** Bank statement behavior, credit utilization, missing documents

## Was your cash flow too thin?

This is the top reason banks and SBA lenders say no. They calculate your [debt service coverage ratio](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/dscr-explained/) and if the new payment pushes it below 1.25 at a bank or 1.15 at an SBA lender, the answer is no regardless of credit. Online lenders decline for the same reason when your deposits do not support the payment.

The fix is to ask for less, ask for longer, or clear existing debt. A smaller loan over a longer term can pass where the original request failed. If the business does not produce the cash, no lender will fix that.

## Is your business too new?

Banks typically require two years of operating history and most SBA lenders prefer it. Online term lenders want a year, some six months. Cash advance providers accept three to six months of deposits. Applying to a bank at 14 months is a decline waiting to happen.

The fix is to apply to lenders whose minimum you already meet, and to count time in business correctly: from the first revenue, which may be earlier than your incorporation date. [Financing under one year](https://businessloanbroker.ai/situations/under-one-year/) lists what is realistic, and [startup with no revenue](https://businessloanbroker.ai/situations/startup-no-revenue/) covers businesses with no revenue yet.

## Did your credit fall short?

Every lender has a floor: typically 680 at banks, 650 for SBA, 600 online, and around 500 for cash advances. But the number is only part of it. Recent late payments, a collection in the last year, high card utilization, a recent bankruptcy, and a burst of hard inquiries each cause declines above the floor.

Fixes that work within a few months: pay card balances under 30% of their limits, resolve any collection, and stop applying for new credit. [Business credit scores](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/business-credit-scores/) explains what each lender checks, and [bad credit business loans](https://businessloanbroker.ai/situations/bad-credit/) covers what is available now.

## Is your industry restricted?

Many lenders decline or limit certain industries regardless of the numbers: restaurants, trucking, construction, cannabis, firearms, adult entertainment, gambling and crypto. A decline for industry is often silent; the lender simply says the file does not fit its credit box.

The fix is to apply to lenders that work in your industry. Restaurants, trucking and construction each have lenders that specialize in them. Equipment financing and invoice factoring are often open where term loans are not, because the asset or the receivable carries the risk. The [industries hub](https://businessloanbroker.ai/industries/) explains what lenders look for in each category.

## Were documents missing or inconsistent?

Incomplete files are declined or withdrawn more often than owners realize. Inconsistency is worse than absence: revenue on the application that the bank statements do not support, or a balance sheet that omits a loan the statements reveal will end an application.

The fix is to send the full [document checklist](https://businessloanbroker.ai/guides/document-checklist/) the first time, make sure the numbers agree across documents, and answer every follow up the same day. If you use an AI assistant through our MCP server, it extracts the figures from your documents and checks the application against them before submission; see the [agents hub](https://businessloanbroker.ai/agents/).

## Do you have too much debt, a tax lien or a judgment?

Existing debt lowers your DSCR. Stacking, which means taking a second or third cash advance while a first is still being repaid, is a near automatic decline at most lenders, and the daily withdrawals are visible on your statements. The fix is consolidation: a single term loan or [refinance](https://businessloanbroker.ai/situations/refinance-business-debt/) that pays off the advances will often be approved where a new advance would not.

An unpaid tax lien or civil judgment is a decline at most banks and SBA lenders. Pay, settle, or get into a formal payment plan; many lenders will finance the payoff itself, as [financing a tax bill](https://businessloanbroker.ai/situations/tax-bill/) explains.

## Did your bank statements show overdrafts or negative days?

Online lenders and cash advance companies read bank statements first and often decline on them alone. The triggers are NSF or returned items, days the balance was negative, average daily balances that are low relative to deposits, and a falling trend in deposits. Four or more negative days in a month is a decline at many lenders.

The fix is three clean months. Keep a cushion in the operating account, move money before a payment rather than after, and ask your bank for overdraft protection. Then reapply; lenders weigh the most recent months most, so a clean quarter after a messy one usually works.

| Reason | Who declines for it most | Time to fix | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin cash flow | Banks, SBA lenders | Immediate to a year | Ask for less or longer, consolidate debt |
| Time in business | Banks, SBA lenders | Months to a year | Apply to lenders whose minimum you meet |
| Personal credit | All lenders | 3 to 24 months | Cut utilization, clear collections |
| Industry | Banks, many online lenders | Not fixable | Use lenders that specialize in your industry |
| Missing or inconsistent documents | All lenders | Days | Send the full checklist |
| Stacking, tax liens, judgments | Most lenders | Weeks to months | Consolidate; pay or settle |
| Overdrafts and negative days | Online lenders, cash advance companies | 3 months | Three clean statements with a cushion |

## Questions and answers
**Will the lender tell me why I was declined?**

In the US, lenders must give business applicants a reason or tell them they have the right to request one, and it is worth asking. Ask what specifically would change the answer; a good lender will say which number needs to move.

**How soon can I reapply after a decline?**

Immediately with a different type of lender, if the decline reason is one that lender does not use, such as time in business. With the same lender, wait until the reason is fixed: three months for bank statement problems, longer for credit.

**Does a decline hurt my credit?**

The decline itself is not reported. Any hard credit pull made during the application stays on your report for two years and can lower your score slightly for a few months. Several hard pulls in a short period hurt more.

**Can I get a loan if the bank declined me last week?**

Often yes. Banks have the strictest criteria, so a bank decline says little about online, SBA or equipment lenders. If the reason was cash flow, look at a smaller amount or longer term; if it was time in business or credit, apply to lenders with lower floors.
