What is a business credit card?
It is a revolving credit line issued in your business's name, with you as the guarantor. You spend, pay at least the minimum each month, and carry or clear the balance. Issuers underwrite your personal credit and stated revenue, so a business that opened last week can be approved. Many cards report to business credit bureaus, which builds a file that later helps with loans.
Compared with a line of credit, a card has a lower limit, a higher ongoing rate and a purchase focus: moving cash to your bank account means a cash advance fee. The advantages are speed, rewards and the 0% introductory window.
Who qualifies for a business credit card?
Most issuers want personal credit of 670 or higher for their main cards and 720 or higher for the best 0% and rewards offers. You need a business, which can be a sole proprietorship with your own tax ID, and you will state annual revenue and years in operation. Startups with no revenue are approved regularly on personal credit alone.
- Declined most often: personal credit under 640, too many recent card applications, high existing card balances relative to limits, and a bankruptcy in the last few years.
- Secured business cards, backed by a cash deposit, exist for owners rebuilding credit; see bad credit options.
What does a business credit card really cost?
Used well, nothing. A typical example: you put $15,000 of equipment and supplies on a card with 0% for 12 months and pay $1,250 a month. Total interest is zero. Carry the same $15,000 at 24% APR instead, paying only interest, and it costs about $3,600 a year. Pull $15,000 as a cash advance and you pay a 5% fee, $750, plus 28% from day one.
Annual fees run $0 to $700 on premium cards and are only worth paying if the rewards exceed them. The real risk is the cliff: a 0% balance that is not paid off before the intro period ends starts accruing at the full rate immediately. Our rates guide explains how to compare card APR with a loan.

Apply nowHow do you qualify, and what documents do you need?
Usually none. The application asks for your business name, tax ID or social security number, business structure, years in operation, annual revenue and your personal income. Issuers verify your personal credit electronically and rarely ask for statements or returns unless the requested limit is large.
Before applying, check your personal credit report for errors and pay balances down below 30% of limits. Space applications a few months apart, since each one is a hard inquiry. Our business credit scores guide explains how card reporting helps build the business file. The document checklist is for the loans you will apply for later.
How long does a business credit card take?
Approval is often instant, sometimes within a few days if the issuer reviews manually. The physical card arrives in 5 to 10 days, and many issuers give you a virtual card number immediately for online purchases. That makes a card the quickest financing on this site, ahead of even a merchant cash advance.
It is also the quickest to misuse. A card is right for purchases you can clear within the 0% window or a few months; it is wrong for payroll shortfalls that recur. For those, see cash flow gap financing.
When should you choose something else?
Choose a line of credit when you need cash rather than purchases, or more than about $50,000, because a line transfers to your bank account without an advance fee and at a lower rate. Choose equipment financing for a single large item, since a five year loan at 10% beats a card at 24% once the intro period ends.
Choose a card only if you have a plan to pay it off. A revolving balance at 24% for two years costs almost half the original purchase in interest.
