Can you get a business loan when your business is seasonal?
Yes, and seasonal businesses are a large part of every lender's book, from landscaping and tourism to retail and construction. The difference between a yes and a no is usually whether the lender sees twelve months or three. A bank or SBA lender that reads a full year understands the pattern. An online lender that reads 90 days sees a business in decline if those 90 days are the off season.
The honest limit: if your slow season produces negative balance days and you have no winter revenue at all, lenders will size any loan to the slow months, not the peak. Contracts, deposits or a second line of business that covers the off season change that. See landscaping for a worked example.
Which products will consider you, ranked by fit
Ranked by how well they fit a seasonal cycle:
- A line of credit: draw in the slow months, repay in the busy ones, pay only for what you use. Bank lines for established businesses; online lines after a year.
- SBA seasonal lines under the CAPLines program, built for exactly this, with the SBA 7(a) guarantee behind them.
- Revenue based financing, where the payment is a share of sales and shrinks in the off season by design.
- Inventory financing, for stocking ahead of the peak, repaid as the stock sells.
- Equipment financing, with some lenders offering seasonal payment schedules, lower in slow months.
Which products will decline you, so you stop wasting applications
Online lenders that underwrite from the last three months of deposits decline seasonal businesses in the off season almost automatically, because the trend looks like a failing business. Merchant cash advances with fixed daily remittances are the wrong shape: the remittance does not shrink when sales do, and a winter of fixed daily payments drains the account. Banks decline when the slow months show overdrafts or when there are no financial statements that lay out the full year.
If you must apply in the off season, go to lenders that read twelve months and ask for a seasonal structure. Read loan versus line of credit before you accept any product with a fixed payment.

Apply nowHow to improve your odds in 30, 90 and 180 days
In 30 days: build a month by month cash forecast that shows the peak, the trough and how the trough is covered. Pull twelve months of statements rather than three. If you are in season, apply right away for a line sized to next winter and leave it undrawn.
In 90 days: sign contracts that produce off season revenue, like snow removal, maintenance plans or deposits for next season. Move a fixed share of peak deposits into a reserve account so the statements never show a negative day.
In 180 days: with a full year of clean statements and a reserve, apply to a bank or an SBA lender for a seasonal line at the lowest cost available. How to get a business loan covers the bank process.
What will it cost compared with a standard borrower?
Applied for in season with twelve months of statements, a seasonal business pays standard rates: 8% to 15% APR on a bank line, 10% to 40% on an online line, prime plus a set spread on an SBA seasonal line. Revenue based financing prices at factor rates of 1.1 to 1.4, with the advantage that the payment shrinks when sales do.
Applied for in the off season, the same business pays a premium or gets declined. The products still open are advances at factor rates of 1.3 to 1.5 and secured loans against equipment. The premium is entirely a timing cost, and it is avoidable. A line opened in July costs nothing until you draw it in January.
