Can you get a business loan to cover a cash flow gap?
Yes, if you can name the gap. Lenders fund gaps with a cause and an end: receivables that will pay, a slow season that will turn, a one time cost. They check whether deposits are stable and whether the gap has a date on it; if so, approval is fast.
If the gap has no end, meaning the business spends more than it brings in every month, lenders will usually decline, and the ones that say yes will make it worse with daily payments. A loan buys time to fix pricing, costs or collections; it does not replace the fix. Working capital explains how lenders measure the gap.
Which products will consider you, ranked by fit
Ranked by the cause of the gap:
- Customers pay slowly: invoice financing or factoring, which turns the invoices into cash and costs 1% to 4% per 30 days.
- The gap repeats with the season: a line of credit, drawn in the slow months and repaid in the strong ones, ideally opened before the slow months arrive.
- A one time cost, like a repair, a deposit or a tax bill: a short term loan with a fixed payment over 6 to 24 months.
- Small, brief gaps: a business credit card, free if paid within the cycle.
- Card heavy businesses with nothing else open: a merchant cash advance, fast and expensive.
Which products will decline you, so you stop wasting applications
Banks and SBA lenders are not built for emergencies: a bank line takes weeks to set up and an SBA loan takes months, so apply to them for next year's gap, not this month's. Every lender declines when the last three months show falling deposits, more than a few negative balance days, or existing advances remitting daily, because those are the signs of a profit problem.
Stacking a second advance on top of a first to cover the first's payments is the most common way a cash flow gap becomes a closure. If you are there, read refinancing business debt before you take anything new.

Apply nowHow to improve your odds in 30, 90 and 180 days
In 30 days: build a 13 week cash forecast, even a rough one, so you can show the lender when the gap closes. Invoice faster, chase anything past due, and ask large customers for a deposit. Gather your statements and open invoices and apply for the product that matches the cause.
In 90 days: open a line of credit while the statements look healthy, so the next gap is a draw. Negotiate supplier terms to push payments out.
In 180 days: with six clean months, apply for a bank line, which is the cheapest cover there is. If gaps keep appearing, the fix is in pricing or collections, not credit. Seasonal business financing covers the yearly version of this problem.
What will it cost compared with a standard borrower?
A line of credit you already hold costs only interest on the days you use it, 8% to 15% APR at a bank and 10% to 40% online, which for a $40,000 draw repaid in 45 days is roughly $400 to $1,500. Invoice financing costs 1% to 3% per 30 days. A short term loan taken in a hurry costs 15% to 60% APR plus a 1% to 5% origination fee. An advance costs a factor rate of 1.2 to 1.5, so $40,000 costs $8,000 to $20,000 regardless of how fast you repay.
The cheapest and the most expensive cover differ by ten times or more, and the difference is whether you arranged it before the gap or during it. Compare in the MCA true cost calculator before you accept an offer.
