How do ChatGPT apps, connectors and custom MCP work?

Three doors into the same room. Apps are listed in ChatGPT's directory and built on MCP; you enable one, sign in, and call it inside a chat. Connectors link ChatGPT to your files and mail, such as Google Drive, Gmail and Outlook, so it can search them. Custom MCP connectors are servers you add by URL in developer mode when a product is not in the directory, which is how you add ours.

On individual paid plans you turn on developer mode in settings and add a custom connector yourself. On Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an owner or admin has to enable apps and developer mode, or publish the connector, before members see it. Custom connectors are not reviewed by OpenAI, so add only servers whose operator you can verify. Menu names change often; our ChatGPT page has the current steps for ours.

Finance and funding: BusinessLoanBroker.ai

This is ours. Add it as a custom MCP connector, sign in with a free business account, and ChatGPT can apply for a business loan for you: it reads the bank statements, tax returns and financials you share, fills the application, lists what is missing, matches lenders in every category and submits only after you confirm the lenders and the documents. Offers come back summarized by amount, cost, payment and term.

What to watch: it cannot accept an offer, sign documents or change your numbers, and no one can guarantee approval. It is free for your business; lenders pay us when a loan funds, and we are paid the same whichever lender you pick. Workspace admins may need to enable custom apps first. The consent model is on the security page, and using AI to get a business loan explains the process.

Accounting: QuickBooks and Xero

QuickBooks. Intuit has announced QuickBooks as an app inside ChatGPT, which lets ChatGPT read your profit and loss, balance sheet and receivables and help with invoices from your own books. Check the directory for what the app exposes on your plan, because the tool list is Intuit's and changes. Let it read freely; approve writes one at a time. You pay for QuickBooks, not for the app.

Xero. Xero publishes an MCP server covering contacts, invoices, bank transactions and reports. If Xero is not in the ChatGPT directory on your plan, its server can be added as a custom connector in developer mode, which is more technical. For a loan file, either gets you a year to date profit and loss in a sentence instead of an export.

Payments and banking data: Stripe and Plaid based tools

Stripe. Stripe publishes an MCP server that ChatGPT can use as a custom connector to look up customers, payments and subscriptions, check the balance, and create products, invoices and payment links. Keep refunds and cancellations on confirm every time, since those move money or end revenue. Stripe's processing fees are the only cost.

Plaid based tools. Plaid is the connection layer that bookkeeping, cash flow and lending apps use to read your bank transactions with your consent; a small business rarely connects to Plaid directly. Connect the app that already holds your bank feed, or your accounting software, and let ChatGPT read from there. Lenders still want the statement PDFs for a loan, so keep those in a folder ChatGPT can reach through Drive.

Documents: Google Drive and Notion

Google Drive. The Google Drive connector lets ChatGPT search and read documents, sheets and PDFs your account can access, with a setting for whether it may search automatically or only when asked. Ask it to find the lease, summarize last quarter's statements or pull the tax return from a folder. It reads; it does not move files. In a workspace, the admin decides whether it is on.

Notion. The Notion connector lets ChatGPT search and read your pages, and Notion's own MCP server can add writing if you add it as a custom connector. Good for procedures, vendor lists and a simple pipeline. Neither costs anything beyond the Google or Notion plan you have. For a loan, Drive is the one that matters: one folder with tax returns, statements and financials makes the application a short conversation.

Email and calendar: Gmail and Google Calendar

Gmail. The Gmail connector lets ChatGPT search and read your mail so it can summarize a lender thread, find the quote a supplier sent, or draft the follow up. Whether it can send depends on what the connector offers on your plan and what you allow; start with search and draft, and review before anything leaves. Connect only the account you mean to, because the whole inbox is in scope.

Google Calendar. The Calendar connector lets ChatGPT read your schedule and, where allowed, create events, so asking it to find an hour this week for the bank call works. Outlook and Microsoft 365 connectors do the same jobs for businesses on Microsoft. All of these use OAuth, cost nothing beyond your Google or Microsoft plan, and can be revoked from the provider's security page at any time.

CRM, e signature and projects: HubSpot, DocuSign, Asana and Linear

HubSpot. The HubSpot connector lets ChatGPT read contacts, companies and deals and answer what changed in the pipeline this week; writes such as notes and tasks depend on the version in the directory. DocuSign publishes an MCP server, usable as a custom connector, that lists agreements, chases signers and sends from templates; sending an envelope is a real action, so keep it on confirm. Asana and Linear both publish MCP servers and appear in the directory on some plans; either way ChatGPT can read and, where allowed, create and update tasks or issues.

Across every app here, start with one chore, confirm each action for a month, and watch four things: what the app can reach, which actions can send, pay or sign, whether your plan's data settings exclude your chats from training, and who operates a custom connector. For ours, the operator is Levr, the company behind levr.ai; the about page and security page have the details. Best Claude connectors is the companion list, and AI agents for business finance sorts the finance tasks by readiness.
