Is there such a thing as a VA business loan?
No. The Department of Veterans Affairs backs home loans, not business loans, and any site advertising a VA business loan is either describing SBA programs or selling your details as a lead. The real routes for a veteran owned business are SBA loans with fee relief, a few lender and nonprofit programs that favor veterans, and the same bank, online and equipment lenders everyone else uses.
SBA loans are the cheapest money most small businesses can get, and the Veterans Advantage program takes a few thousand dollars of fees off the top. What it will not do is lower the credit bar. Treat your service as a discount, not a shortcut, and start with the business loan requirements lenders check.
Who qualifies for veteran business loans?
At a high level, the SBA veteran programs cover a business at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more of: a veteran with any discharge other than dishonorable, a service disabled veteran, an active duty member in the Transition Assistance Program, a reservist or National Guard member, the current spouse of any of those, or the widowed spouse of a member who died in service or from a service connected disability. You prove it with your discharge papers (DD214) or the equivalent.
A business that is 50% veteran owned does not count, and neither does a veteran employee. Certification through the SBA's VetCert program matters for government contracts, not loans, so do not wait on it.
What is the SBA Veterans Express loan?
SBA Veterans Express is the common name for an SBA Express loan made to a veteran owned business under the Veterans Advantage program. It replaced Patriot Express, which ended in 2013. The loan itself is a standard SBA Express loan: up to $500,000, a term loan or a line of credit, a 50% SBA guarantee, and a quicker decision because the lender uses its own forms.
The veteran part is the fee. At the time of writing, the SBA waives the upfront guarantee fee on Express loans to eligible veteran owned businesses and reduces it on larger standard 7(a) loans. The schedule changes each fiscal year, so confirm the current numbers with your lender.

Pick by what the money does, not by the veteran label.
- SBA 7(a) loans up to $5 million for buying a business, equipment, real estate, refinancing or working capital, on 10 to 25 year terms.
- SBA Express up to $500,000 for a faster answer or a line of credit.
- SBA microloans up to $50,000 through nonprofit intermediaries, several of which run veteran focused funds and accept thinner credit.
- The Military Reservist Economic Injury Disaster Loan, SBA working capital for a business that loses an essential employee to active duty, up to $2 million at the time of writing.
- Equipment financing, term loans and lines from banks and online lenders, some of which waive fees for veterans; our lender directory notes who does.
Are veterans business loans based on credit?
Yes. Veteran status changes the fees, not the underwriting. An SBA lender still pulls your personal credit, reads your bank statements and tax returns, and checks that the business can cover the payment. Most SBA lenders want a score of about 640 or higher, two years in business for a standard 7(a), and debt coverage of 1.15 to 1.25, explained in DSCR explained. Microloan intermediaries go lower.
If your score is under 600, SBA loans are unlikely, and the honest path is business loans with bad credit while you rebuild. One real advantage: veteran focused lenders often accept a service record as the management experience a young business lacks on paper.
