SIC and NAICS
Why do I have a SIC code and a NAICS code?
SIC is the 1987 system, four digits. NAICS replaced it in 1997 and is six digits. The SEC, some lenders and many insurers still record SIC, so most businesses carry both. One SIC code often maps to several NAICS codes, which is why the converter shows every match.
Which one does a lender want?
NAICS. Lenders, the SBA and the IRS classify by NAICS 2022. If a form asks for SIC, use the crosswalk here; if it asks for NAICS, use the calculator.
